How To Dose Homemade Cannabis Edibles
Knowing how to dose your homemade edibles is important.
First, you want to make sure that you are getting the dosage you need to help with your medical condition.
Second, being able to calculate the dose will help you avoid taking too much. While no one has died of a cannabis overdose the effects can be quite uncomfortable. Since the effects of cannabis that has been eaten last longer than what you would get from smoking or vaping this can leave you with undesirable effects that last for hours. No one wants to go through that.
In order to calculate the dose in your canna butter or oil you need to start with some basic information:
How many grams of cannabis did you use in creating your butter?
What measurement of butter or oil did you use when you made it?

And this one to create your own butter or oil once you have finished activating your cannabis:
How To Calculate The Dose Of Your Homemade Canna Butter Or Oil
If you are purchasing cannabis from a dispensary then it most likely will come with a label indicating the percentage of THC or CBD that is present. You can calculate either one. To calculate CBD or THC just follow the steps as shown below. In this example I am using THC. But you can use CBD as well.
Before we start here are some basic measurements we are going to be working with:
1 gram of cannabis = 1000 milligrams
28 grams of cannabis = 1 ounce

*Find the percentage of THC/CBD present in your cannabis:
If you purchased at a dispensary then take a look at the label to find the percentage of THC. In this example let’s just say that we know that the cannabis has 15.9% THC.
*Calculate total amount of THC/CBD in 1 gram:
1 gram of this cannabis will contain 159 mg of THC (1000 mg in 1 gram X 15.9%) = 159 mg of THC
*Calculate total amount of THC/CBD in your total weight of cannabis:
I have 3.5 mg of this cannabis that I am using to make cannabutter so the total amount of THC in the batch would be
556.5 mg of THC (159 mg X 3.5 gm of material = 556.5).
*Calculate amount of THC/CBD in your cannabutter:
If I use 1 cup of butter or coconut oil to make my cannabutter then 1 cup will have 556.5 mg of THC.
There are 16 tablespoons or 48 teaspoons in 1 cup of butter.
Each tablespoon of butter would have 35 mg of THC (556.5 divided by 16 = 34.8).
Each teaspoon of butter would have 12 mg of THC (556.6 divided by 48 = 11.6).
*Decide on the dose per item:
If I want 5 mg of THC per item and this recipe makes 12 then I would want to have 60 mg of THC total (5 mg X 12 items = 60 mg).
If my cannabutter contains 12 mg per teaspoon then I need to use 5 teaspoons in this recipe to get a dosage of 5 mg per energy bite. (60 mg total in recipe divided by 12 mg per teaspoon = 5 teaspoons).
There are also online calculators that you can use to determine the amount of THC/CBD in your cannabutter. You would just need to know the percentage of THC or CBD in your cannabis and how much butter/oil you are adding it too in order to calculate the total. Then you can easily break it down to find out how much per tablespoon or teaspoon.
Personally I prefer to replace some of the oil/butter in a recipe with my cannabutter. I stick with consistent, low doses to get the desired effect I need which means that I dose with small amounts (5 mg or less) with each dose. The effects of cannabis that has been eaten takes longer to start but, once it does, it continues to produce an effect much longer than smoked or vaped cannabis.

Once you’ve created your canna butter or oil and you know how much you need to use in your recipe to get the dose needed it’s time to start creating some cannabis edibles! Check out these delicious recipes here.
